Roadtrip Ideas
Everybody likes a good roadtrip, but sometimes it's hard to come up with great roadtrip ideas. A lot of people think you can only do a roadtrip in the summer, but no matter what time of year it is, roadtrips are a great way to get away from it all.
Some of the most common roadtrip ideas for year round vacationing include hitting the road to catch the fall leaves turning their spectacular colors, heading south in the winter to get a little warmer sun, taking a Spring Break style roadtrip to the beaches in the spring after being cooped up all winter, or turning your wheels to a new casino area you've never been to before.
But really that's only the beginning.... When you're getting antsy and have to get away from it all, there are tons of things you can do with a roadtrips!
Themed Road Trip Ideas
It can be a lot of fun and create a very unusual roadtrip if you choose to build it all around a specific theme. Here are some examples of themed roadtrip ideas to get you started:
Favorite Book Roadtrip: Choose a great novel with strong ties to a particular area of the country and take a road trip there. Better yet, find a book that centers around a roadtrip or travel in general, and visit the same places that are in the book.
I once did a roadtrip centered around Gone With The Wind and went to Peachtree Street in Atlanta, took a tour of an old cotton plantation, explored some of the Civil War battlefields in the area, etc., and had a really great time.
Movie Roadtrip: This would be the same idea as the book idea above, but would revolve around a favorite movie or television show instead of a book. I would LOVE to do a Deadwood roadtrip!
National Parks Roadtrip: The nation has so many amazing national parks that you could easily build a roadtrip around them, probably without even leaving your state! You can make it a camping roadtrip, do your roadtrip in the off-season so that room rates are cheap, or even make a daytrip out of it. If you plan to camp, make sure you check to see if reservations are necessary... some national parks book up months in advance.
National Mall Roadtrip: This is a great roadtrip for just about any time of year because there are so many attractions in Washington D.C., but I think the best time of year is in the Spring when the Cherry Blossoms are blooming... Plus the Cherry Blossom Festival is a lot of fun.
Beach Roadtrip: It can make for a really great roadtrip to start at one great beach and work your way up or down the coast and hit a new beach everyday. Most people only think of hitting the beaches in the spring and summer, and they usually only think of California or Florida, but the best coastal roadtrip I ever had was on the coast of Maine in the middle of winter... The ice formations are spectacular and tourism is light, making for the feeling of kind of being in your own little world!
Holiday Roadtrips: A lot of places around the country work really hard to get you there over the holidays and a holiday roadtrip can make for a great memory to last a lifetime. Asheville, North Carolina goes all out with Christmas celebrations and the Biltmore Estate is a real treat at Christmas, Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Branson, Missouri, and Disney is great if you have children.
