Recommending Affiliate Products

If you're unfamiliar with the concept of affiliate marketing, don't feel bad. Most people have no idea that affiliate programs exist, what they are, or that you can actually earn a good living with them.

So, let's start at the beginning.

Affiliate programs are basically referral programs. It works like this:

1. You find a product or service that you think would be of interest to your website visitors. For example's sake, let's say that you have a website dedicated to poodles. You would search the internet for products and services related to poodles, like a training guide, special clothes for poodles, or a super duper poodle house.

2. Once you find a product that you think would tie in nicely with your poodle website, you would check to see if that website operates an affiliate program. You should see a link for affiliates in the main menu or somewhere at the bottom of the page. Once you find the link, click on it and you will find the terms of the company's affiliate program.

   When you read the particulars about the affiliate program you're interested in, you'll find that the program pays its affiliates on a per sale, per lead, or per click basis. Following our poodle example, let's say that the company that sells the super duper poodle house offers 20% of each sale referred by affiliates as a commission.

3. If you like the terms of the affiliate program, you fill out their signup form and submit it.

4. Once you've been accepted into the affiliate program, the company you're an affiliate for will give you links, images, banners, etc. to use to promote their product.

5. Once you get your affiliate links, you'll post those links on your website. Whenever one of your website visitors clicks on your affiliate link to the super duper poodle house and buys one, you will receive a 20% commission.

And that's how affiliate programs work in a nutshell.

Of course, there's a lot more to promoting affiliate products than throwing out a few links and watching the money flow in… but there are a lot of advantages to promoting them. The biggest advantage is having a product to promote without having any of the customer service, product creation, order processing, etc.
